A Sustainable Approach
Flexibility is a central theme underlying the design of a sustainable building. Designed on a modular principle, our building is made up of autonomous spaces, offering great potential for adapting and dividing up the floor space in different ways.
The operational aspects of the building embody the concept of sustainability:
- Optimising the use of technology
- Lowering energy consumption
- Optimising maintenance
One example of the sustainable approach is the Seasonal Thermal Energy Storage (STES) concept for supplying energy for the building’s thermal management.
Water stored in a huge 14,000m³ tank located in the basement is used for thermal transfers for both heating and cooling purposes, enabling optimal use of the existing basement space. Moreover, the system is able to draw on the natural groundwater fill the STES. Most of the technical installations are centralised in the basement areas as well. With the new system, future energy consumption in the new building will be 7 times lower compared with the old building. This approach meets the challenging requirements for obtaining the BREEAM Excellent certification.
